According to the 24th Annual Weber GrillWatch Survey, just half of tailgate grill owners consider tickets to the game a must-have item. It’s all about the party; the grill, great food, packed coolers, comfy folding chairs and alcoholic beverages.
While the word “healthy” is not classically a word associated to these parties, it doesn’t always have to be all about bratwurst sausages and huge cheese stuffed greasy hamburgers. There is a way of celebrating without all the fat and calories and feeling a notch better the next morning.
Tread softly though when you try to change or ‘lighten’ up traditional foods that people have been enjoying for years. You may want to change a few things at a time and perhaps not move directly to grilled tilapia and zucchini right away so it’s not such a shock to participants. There are ways of giving your tailgate party a healthier twist without people even noticing.
Start by making your burgers lean and packing them with flavour by adding diced garlic, onions, chill powder and different herbs. Less bread crumb filling and using lean ground beef or better yet, ground turkey is a great change without compromising flavour. Your crockpot meatballs can be done the same way.
Lollipop lamb chops are a great option to consider instead of the higher calorie classic barbecue wings. Finger food with no sticky red fingers!
These slow cooker Buffalo Chicken Sandwiches are so good people may not even notice if you sneak in a little lettuce in the whole wheat roll.
What’s a party without veggies and dip? Cut up lots of veggie choice like carrots, green/red peppers, broccoli, cauliflower and add tiny tomatoes. The more colour the better to entice and then add some of these amazing Healthy Dips suggestions.
Eating healthier is a good thing for everyone. Since tailgate parties are all about food, drink and touchdowns, why not incorporate some of these healthier yet VERY tasty choices into your next party!
