Why Kiss at Midnight?
Have you ever wondered why people kiss at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve? It’s a common occurrence in all cultures to greet one another with some form of physical contact. It might be a hand shake, a kiss, rubbing noses… etc.. It is a gesture of well wishing and appreciation of meeting. What better way to begin a brand new year than to extend those wishes to those around you through physical contact.
Whether at a huge gala, or a party for two, the choice is yours how you would like to extend your wishes for good health, wealth and happiness for the upcoming year. Most will choose to kiss and/or hug one another at midnight. The kiss can occur on the lips, on the cheek or on the hand depending on the relationship you feel you have with the person beside you…(or that you’re hoping to have with the person beside you.. 🙂 )
Just remember to be conscious of the reception/appropriateness of your gesture with whoever you are choosing to kiss. Most people will grasp a sense of those around them what is acceptable at the time. A long lingering kiss with a person you don’t know while their spouse looks on is NOT appropriate. Similarly, a short peck on the cheek with your wife of 10 years will NOT be appreciated.
Your best bet is to make sure you are with the person who means the most to you at the stroke of midnight and exchange your kiss with the sentiment that feels right. Then move around the room letting others know you wish them the best for the upcoming year.
Wishing you all the best!
