Have you ever wondered; while slugging back your beer and crazily showing off your polka moves at Oktoberfest celebrations, where Oktoberfest actually began and why so many communities celebrate it every year? Well, the story goes…
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, a Prince (who later became King Ludwig I) married a beautiful Princess named Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 17, 1810. To celebrate the marriage, the loyal soldiers of the Prince’s National Guard decided that a horse race in the presence of the Royal Family would be a fitting way to celebrate the new couple and the Prince’s father (King Max) agreed. A decision was subsequently made to repeat the horse races every year which gave rise to the Oktoberfest tradition.
Now, a tradition for over 180 years in Munich Germany, this Bavarian festival called Oktoberfest continues to be celebrated with great food, lively Bavarian music and entertainment including Bavarian dancers and beer barrel races. It’s become a wonderful way of celebrating the end of the harvest season by bringing the community together for fun and enjoyment.
Join the festivities in your own town or city and in other locations for fun with parades, events and parties. You might even want to organize your own celebration with friends and family by having an Oktoberfest party of your own.
